Martin/Martin provided an extensive, complete assessment of this historic railroad prior to Denver & Rio Grand Western's purchase of it in 1979. Since, we conduct biannual inspections, bridge ratings and assessments, and bridge analysis and upgrades to increase load capacity.
The railroad was originally built to transport silver and gold ore mined from the San Juan Mountains. Today, it is a tourist and heritage line to transport passengers, and it is one of the few lines that has exclusively used steam locomotives, operating continuously since 1881!
