School Complex Seismic Evaluation and Retrofit

Andersen Air Force Base, Yigo, Guam

An ASCE 41 Tier 2 seismic evaluation of three existing determined that the concrete structures had structural deficiencies including insufficient lateral resisting elements and insufficient chords and collectors, recommending mitigation measures to meet code. Development of a UFC 3-301-01/ASCE 41 Tier 3 seismic retrofit was completed to address the deficiencies that were incorporated into a phased set of design documents to minimize the impact on school operations. The retrofit solution includes the addition of new concrete shearwalls and foundations, as well as concrete diaphragm and collector strengthening utilizing carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP).
